The grass is growing back now

Bailey Rafter

The grass is growing back now.

You didn’t think it would.

You thought the ash would suffocate the sprouts.

But somehow it didn’t.

The flowers are beginning to bloom now.

You thought you’d never see them again.

Or smell their sweet perfume.

You thought the sulfur would last forever.

But somehow it didn’t.

The rain is pattering softly now.

Refreshment never felt so foreign.

The searing pain so impenetrable that relief became a fiction.

But here it is.

You never thought this day would come.

The day you recovered.

The day the fire was forgotten.

The day you were reborn.
